On 5th November, Melanie Gibson-Barton returned to St Botolph's church hall to give us a presentation on the final stages of the First World War, which she called 'From Passchendaele to Peace' - a very appropriate talk for this month of Remembrance.
At our meeting on 1st October, Ken Chamberlain entertained us with a very interesting presentation on the history of the Thames Nautical Training College, H.M.S. Worcester, which was based at Greenhithe for many years.
On Tuesday 3rd September, Stuart Robinson gave our Group its first talk following the summer break, with a very interesting presentation on the Great Fire of London.
On 4th June, we were given a very entertaining talk by Michael Wenban about his life working on the River Thames. Michael, who writes a weekly column on river matters for the local Gravesend Messenger, related many interesting and often amusing events from his long career as a tug master on the London River.
At our meeting on 7th May, we enjoyed a return visit by popular local historian Chris Bull who gave us a presentation on Gravesend and the history of its clock tower.

Sir Christopher Wren
Popular speaker Ian Bevan returned to give us a very interesting presentation on the life and work of Sir Christopher Wren, particularly in respect of his architectural designs for the rebuilding of so many of the London churches after the Great Fire of 1666, culminating, of course, in his masterpiece, St Paul's cathedral, with its spectacular dome.

Whitechapel: 1888 A Year of Murder & the Age of Poverty
On Tuesday 5th February, Stuart Robinson took us back to the London of late Victorian times to discover the darker side of the city, when the notorious activities of Jack the Ripper were causing sensational headlines in the Press. The year 1888 was, as Stuart observed, a year of murder in an age of poverty. A grim subject lightened by Stuart’s style of presentation.
