Northfleet History Group - March 2014 Meeting
WOMEN IN UNIFORM
Another large audience of members welcomed Carol Brown (nee Harris) back to St Botolph’s church hall for our meeting on Tuesday 4th March when she gave a very interesting talk on the role of women in the forces during the two world wars.
She told us how, despite some initial misgivings about women joining the services, the various roles taken by the FANY, ATS, WAAF and WRNS were of vital importance to the war effort and the patronage of Queen Mary and later, Queen Elizabeth, ensured a respectable image was achieved! Carol illustrated her talk by displaying various items of the uniforms worn, which brought back memories to many of the ladies in the audience. This was a very interesting talk, delivered in Carol’s usual entertaining style.
