Northfleet History Group - May 2013 Meeting.
THE VILLAGE OF SOUTHFLEET
Another almost ‘full house’ of around 100 members and visitors assembled at St Botolph’s church hall on Tuesday, 7th May to hear Terry Poole talk about our near neighbour, the village of Southfleet, its origins, its buildings and some of its interesting characters. Clearly passionately interested in his home village, Terry entertained us with many details of the history of the village, which traditionally was a mainly agricultural area where the local farmers and landowners held sway. He related some of the various experiences of his schooldays and of his life growing up in the village (not forgetting his lifelong love of cricket!). Terry gave a very interesting and informative talk, accompanied by an excellent series of pictures.
After the tea interval, Alex Pavitt gave a short talk entitled ‘Happenings on the Hill’, exploring some of the oldest buildings on The Hill and revealing the surprising activities of some of their former inhabitants.
We now look forward to our next event, which is the Group’s outing to Hatfield House on Wednesday 22nd May.
Our last indoor meeting before we break for the summer will be held in St Botolph’s church hall on Tuesday, 4th June, when we hope to welcome Ian Bevan, who expects to be fully recovered from his recent spell in hospital and will be able to tell us about the London Inns of Court, its origins, buildings and the interesting people who lived and worked there.
Visitors are most welcome at all of our meetings. Admission is £1 for members and £1.50 for visitors. Tea and a biscuit only 50p. No need to book.
